Not so long ago I did a photo shoot on 1930’s Hollywood glamour. During this photo shoot I was in charge of styling. The style of the 1930’s is very glamorous and elegant with ball room gowns, fur jackets and fur throws over the shoulder. The hair was a short cut with a wave diagonally across the back of the hair with red lipstick and arched eyebrows. The dress that we style the model in was in a slinky floor length dress that was v shaped at the back.
From 1920 to the end of World War 2 in 1945 a lot of fashion trends emerged, during the time of the war in Paris designers gained an insight of the era for women freedom and change. One of the big fashion statements was the shoulder, with butterfly and bango sleeves and over the top shoulder pads for both men and women in the 1940. Also Hollywood cinema and theatre had really taken off despite the economic struggle during the time encouraging the glitz and the glamour of the long silk ball gowns that were classy and elegant worn for the red carpets. Also not only evening wear was glamorous but casual wear was also attractive yet practical.
The fashion was for women became much more feminine which has very much so influence fashion today. When the great depression hit spending was cut back and effected women from farming families to high society groups resorted to everyday wear. Edward Molyneux was one of the big British designer during this period designer whose has dressed high society actresses for example Greta Garbo, Margaret Leighton and Marlene Dietrich also the Princess Marina, Duchess of Kentfashion. Edward Molyneux was well known for his streamlined backless white satin evening dress with silver-fox furs thrown over the shoulder, an iconic look of the 30's. But Edward Molyneux was best known for his genius handling of navy blue and black, whether an easy pleated skirt-suit or evening dress.
Another fashion designer Norman Hartnell consists of comprised tailored day ensembles and elegant evening clothes. In 1938 he was dressmaker to the British Royal Family the brides and bridesmaids dresses for the wedding of the Duke of Gloucester, 3rd son of King George V. Also design for theatre, film costumes as well as British Red Cross His first collection in 1927 which was in pairs and from them became recognized for the embroidered luxurious ball gowns in both satin and tulle and also the elegantly tailored suits, coats, and woollen tweed garments.
Another designer Victor Stiebel who trained under Reville & Rossiter and established his own business in 1932. He designed sophisticated gown also utility clothing during the Second World War.
In conclusion it clear to see that a lot of the fashion from 1930’s-1945 has influenced fashion today such as fur jacket that are sold in most high street which are very popular with the younger generation because it makes them feel sophisticated as well as vintage. The glam of the 1930’s have inspired red carpet events as well as movies and theatre.
